Gateway’s mission is to provide a high quality college-preparatory experience and education to a very diverse group of learners, with a specific focus and expertise on serving students with learning differences. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this year, we continue to find our mission to be ambitious and important to educational reform efforts both locally and statewide.

  • Gateway has performed at a high level on the API. Please see the chart below of our scores for the previous three years:
Year Statewide Rank Similar Schools Rank

  • In 2007 Gateway was again named a California Distinguished School. Gateway has held this designation consistently since it first became eligible for consideration in 2003. Each year only 2% of California public schools receive the Distinguished School designation. Gateway is the first charter high school in the state to receive this distinction two times.
  • In 2007 the U.S. Department of Education featured Gateway as one of 8 exemplary schools in the country in its publication: “Innovations in Education: Charter High Schools Closing the Achievement Gap.”
  • In “Students First,” the Governor’s Committee on Education Excellence report released in 2007 (http://www.everychildprepared.org/docs/summary.pdf)

  • In 2004, Gateway was awarded the maximum accreditation of six years from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
  • In each of Gateway’s 10 years, 95%-100% of seniors matriculate to 2 and 4-year colleges. In 2008 100% of Gateway students were accepted to college. 96% are currently enrolled, with 77% attending 4-year schools. 31% are the first in their family to attend college.
  • In order to ensure every student gets the individualized attention necessary for success, Gateway maintains a very small average class size of 22:1
  • 78% of Gateway’s highly skilled teachers possess advanced degrees.
  • Gateway’s success in closing the achievement gap was sited in an amicus brief that was presented to the Supreme Court.
  • All Gateway students take a rigorous college prep course load that exceeds the University of California a-g requirements.
  • Of Gateway’s 450 students, more than 1/3 are currently taking a least one honors or AP class. In 2008 more than half of the students who took AP exams received college credit. On the English AP exam more than 70% qualified for college credit.
  • Gateway has a strong advisory program. Each advisor has no more than 18 students. Students have the same advisor for their entire 4 years. The advisor acts as an academic advisor, counselor and as a ‘go to” person for families.

  • Gateway’s college counseling program was honored by the Rossier School of Education at University of Southern California as a model of school reform excellence that results in measurable results for traditionally underserved students.
