Gateway High School Granted Charter Renewal

March 24th, 2004

San Francisco, CA - March 24, 2004 - Gateway High School, a California Distinguished School and San Francisco public charter high school had its charter renewed by the San Francisco Board of Education.

The Gateway charter was approved by the Board of Education at its March 23, 2004 meeting with all seven board members voting for it. Gateway's charter is reauthorized for another five years until 2009. "Today is a day for all involved in Gateway's success, from the parents, founders and faculty to the San Francisco Superintendent and Board of Education to celebrate innovation and excellence in San Francisco public education. With the unanimous approval of our charter renewal our focus turns to the future, expanding our impact on public education in San Francisco through a strong partnership with SFUSD. Gateway has shown that effective educational reform is possible, and we look forward to sharing our innovative programs and practices with anyone interested in school reform." said Gateway founding Principal and current Executive Director Peter Thorp.

Gateway, located in San Francisco's Inner Sunset District, is a college preparatory public charter school committed to academic excellence through personalized, student-centered learning. Gateway has a learning disabled population of 25%. "I have two children in Gateway High school, one is a Senior and the other is a Freshman. My children receive an excellent education. And I am grateful for the Gateway staff, because of them my daughter is now ready to go off to UC Santa Cruz," commented Gateway parent Gloria Ramirez

Charter schools were authorized by California's Charter School Act of 1992 as an option for parents, students, teachers, and community members to design self-governing public schools established to meet the needs of their community and encourage innovation in public education. They are authorized by school districts and county boards of education. Typically charters are granted for a period of five years. At the end of that time schools petition their local school district for charter renewal. Gateway's new charter runs from July 2004 until June 2009.
