Impressive Performance by Gateway Students on California High School Exit Examination

October 26th, 2001

Gateway students did exceedingly well on the California High School Exit Examination (CSHEE) administered in the spring of 2001, results of which were just released. 96% of Gateway 9th graders a year ago passed the English-language arts portion of the test and 70% passed the mathematics part. This compares very favorably to the San Francisco School District (SFUSD) average of 64% passage on the English-language arts and 57% on the math portion, and places Gateway as the third highest scoring school in SFUSD behind only Lowell and School of the Arts.

The CSHEE results were broken down into various sub-classifications. Within these subgroups Gateway students also performed better than their District counterparts:

* 100% of Gateway's African-American students passed the English-language arts portion (as compared to a District average of 43%) and 47% passed the mathematics sections (as compared to a District average of 19%).

* 93% of Gateway's Latino students passed the English-language arts portion (as compared to a District average of 39%) and 64% passed the mathematics sections (as compared to a District average of 27%).

* 93% of Gateway's economically disadvantaged students passed the English-language arts portion (as compared to a District average of 52%) and 29% passed the mathematics sections (as compared to a District average of 52%).

Gateway Principal Peter Thorp remarked, "These results, used by local and state officials to measure the quality of schools statewide, confirms that Gateway in four short years has become one of the outstanding educational options available to Bay Area families. We are especially convinced that our joint language arts/social sciences humanities program is a major factor in the success our students enjoyed on the verbal portion of the test.”

Spring 2001 marked the first time the CHSEE was administered to California high school students. State law (Senate Bill 2) passed in 1999 authorized development of the CHSEE that students in California public schools will have to pass to receive a high school diploma beginning with the graduating class of 2004. The CHSEE will be administered again in the spring 2002. All students in grade 10 must take the test then, except for those who took it in the spring 2001 and passed both parts. All students in grade 9 may, but are not required to, take the exam.
