Intel Corporation, Blue Ribbon Schools and Scholastic Administr@tor designate Gateway as top U.S. School

Gateway High School selected from more than 1200 applicants as Twenty-first Century Schools of Distinction finalist

San Francisco, CA – June 15, 2004 – Gateway High School is one of the top fifty-six schools in the nation as designated by Intel Corporation, Scholastic Administr@tor and Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Foundation (BRSE). In addition to the honor of being designated as a top school in the nation the BRSE has requested Gateway share its best practices to assist in the launch of a national Interactive Library of Best Practices database.

Intel Corporation and Scholastic Administr@tor magazine, partnered with the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Foundation to develop a new award program to honor schools for implementing innovative and replicable programs that support positive educational outcomes. This program highlights successes of the nation's best schools and celebrates their use of technology, the benefits of strong teamwork and their development of excellent classroom teachers. Gateway is recognized in the Professional Development category of schools that have a culture that encourages teachers, administrators and staff to work together for professional growth. Gateway was also under consideration in the highest category of "Best of the Best."

“Gateway’s fundamental academic philosophy—that all students learn differently and that a well-trained faculty helps all kinds of learners achieve success – motivates us to continuously strive to develop our skills as educators. We are thrilled to be a 21st Century School finalist and to be recognized for our professional development program. Gateway is eager to share its best practices with other schools across the nation to promote excellence in education for all students,” said Peter Thorp, Gateway’s Executive Director.

"The 21st Century Schools of Distinction Awards finalists are already providing a wealth of innovative solutions and best-known methods for achieving excellence," said Wendy Hawkins, Intel director of education. "We applaud these schools and look forward to sharing their award-winning methods to help drive education improvements around the nation."

Finalists were chosen from more than 1,200 applications submitted by public, both charter and non-charter, and independent elementary, middle and high schools nationwide.
