Playwright Tony Kushner Featured Speaker at Gateway Matters of the Mind Luncheon
October 6th, 2004
San Francisco – Tony Kushner, author of Angels in America, addressed a packed theater of Gateway High School supporters and friends at the Annual Gateway “Matters of the Mind:A Literacy Luncheon.”
Despite a last minute venue change, a considerable San Francisco crowd, including Sharon Bradford, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Amanda Brown Chang and Justin Chang, Randi Fisher, Leslie Burlock, Lisille Matheson, Becky Draper, Louise and Paul Renne, Superintendent Arlene Ackerman, School Board Member Heather Hiles, and San Francisco DA Kamala Harris attended to support the School event and to hear award-winning playwright Tony Kushner read from two of his writings. The reading was followed by a lively Q&A hosted by Dr. Milton Chen, Executive Director of the George Lucas Educational Foundation, on topics ranging from the state of public education in America today, the impact of No Child Left Behind, and Mr. Kushner’s personal history during his formative years. The event raised more than $125,000 to benefit Gateway High School.
“Literacy is a gift and each of us must do all we can to ensure that our children can read and read for the joy we know it brings,” said Kushner when asked about literacy and education.
The luncheon concluded with the announcement that the Gateway Learning Center will be the beneficiary of the opening night performance of Mr. Kushner’s new Broadway play, Caroline, or Change, which opens on January 18, 2005. For tickets contact Margot Shaub at 415-242-2654 ext. 16.
