Gateway Recognized as Exemplary Charter School by U.S. Department of Education
April 21st, 2005
(San Francisco, CA – (April 21, 2005) As part of the United States Department of Education’s effort to highlight exemplary charter schools across the nation, Gateway High School, a public charter high school located in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood, will host DOE Director of Educational Technology Susan Patrick on May 3, 2005 at 9:00 AM.
In honor of National Charter Schools Week the U.S. Department of Education has planned several visits by senior Department officials at model charter schools across the country. Gateway, one of four charters in California selected for a site visit, will host Director Patrick and other charter school supporters at the School, located at 1350 Seventh Ave., for a briefing on its award-winning program and tour of the School. At that time Director Patrick will present Gateway with the 2005 National Charter Schools Week Presidential Proclamation.
“It is a privilege to have been invited to participate in the Department of Education’s recognition of the impact charter schools are having on public education nationwide and Gateway looks forward to showing Director Patrick the success our School is having with our 435 public charter school students here in San Francisco,” said Peter Thorp, Gateway’s Executive Director.

Now starting its seventh year of school operations, Gateway is at full enrollment with 440 students in grades 9-12. Gateway has graduated three senior classes, sending students to colleges and universities both near and far. More than 600 students applied for the 100 places in the current 9th grade class.
