Gateway Successful Meeting the Educational Needs of Disadvantaged and Minority Students

August 2nd, 2005

San Francisco, CA – August 2, 2005 – Gateway was selected as a model of success for achieving diversity and raising academic achievement for African-American and Latino students, according to an independent evaluator’s report of SFUSD’s desegregation efforts. The report identified 12 additional public schools that have experienced success with achieving diversity and raising academic performance for African-American and Latino students

The August 2, 2005 independent report, written by UCLA Professor Stuart Biegel, evaluates SFUSD’s progress in desegregating its schools and raising test scores for African American and Latino student.

About Gateway High School

Gateway was founded by a group of parents and educators who believed there was a need in the Bay Area for a smaller, personalized, college preparatory public high school with a commitment to and expertise in serving a diverse student population, including a significant number of students with learning differences. Now in its eighth year of school operations, Gateway is at full enrollment with 440 students in grades 9-12. Gateway has graduated four senior classes, sending students to colleges and universities both near and far. More than 600 students applied for the 100 places in the current 9th grade class.
