Gateway High School Again Meets Annual California and Federal Progress Requirements

September 13th, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – September 13, 2005 – Gateway High School, a California Distinguished School and San Francisco public charter high school achieved a 10-point increase on its Academic Performance Index (API) from 734 in 2004 to 735 in 2005. Gateway met its 2004-2005 API growth target and currently ranks 5th amongst SFUSD public high schools, behind Lowell, SOTA, Washington and Lincoln.

The School also met its Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals in all categories including required participation rate, proficiency rate and graduation rate.

The API is a component of the statewide accountability system for California public schools to measure the academic performance and growth of schools. Its scale ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 1000. The Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is part of No Child Left Behind that requires public schools to show adequate yearly progress in a number of categories including graduation, participation and proficiency.

About Gateway High School

Gateway was founded by a group of parents and educators who believed there was a need in the Bay Area for a smaller, personalized, college preparatory public high school with a commitment to and expertise in serving a diverse student population, including a significant number of students with learning differences. Now in its eighth year of school operations, Gateway is at full enrollment with 440 students in grades 9-12. Gateway has graduated four senior classes, sending students to colleges and universities both near and far. More than 600 students applied for the 100 places in the current 9th grade class. Gateway’s students come from more than 100 different middle schools. For more information, contact Margot Shaub at 415-749-3600 ext. 19.
