Gateway Students Raise More Than $1000 to Benefit Day Care Center Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina

November 30th, 2005

On the evening of November 29, 2005 Gateway students organized and produced Hope Jam II - an evening of music, poetry and dance to benefit a Mississippi childcare center.

The childcare center, located in Hancock County Mississippi, where hurricane Katrina actually made landfall and many of the child care centers were totally destroyed, by the hurricane.

The event was held at Gateway's Lisille B. Matheson Theater where students sold tickets and hosted a dessert bar with homemade and with all proceeds going to help the center reopen its doors to children and families in need.

The Gateway community will continue to maintain a supportive relationship with the Children’s Center throughout the school year; Hope Jam II was the kick-off to this relationship.

About Gateway High School

Gateway was founded by a group of parents and educators who believed there was a need in the Bay Area for a smaller, personalized, college preparatory public high school with a commitment to and expertise in serving a diverse student population, including a significant number of students with learning differences. Now starting its eighth year of school operations, Gateway is at full enrollment with 440 students in grades 9-12. Gateway has graduated three senior classes, sending students to colleges and universities both near and far. More than 600 students applied for the 100 places in the current 9th grade class. Gateway’s students come from more than 100 different Bay Area middle schools. For more information, contact Margot Shaub at 415-749-3600 ext.19, www.gatewayhigh.org
