Gateway High School Celebrates 10 Years as a Model Charter High School

January 17th, 2008

Gateway High School has launched its 10 Year Anniversary Celebration.

Gateway High School, a California Distinguished School in San Francisco is celebrating its 10th year this year. In 1998 Gateway was founded by a group of parents and educators who believed there was a need in the Bay Area for a smaller, personalized, college preparatory public high school with a commitment to and expertise in serving a diverse student population, including a significant number of students with learning differences. Today this urban charter high school is at full enrollment with 450 students in grades 9-12. Gateway has graduated five senior classes, sending students to colleges and universities both near and far. More than 600 students applied for the 120 places in the current 9th grade class. Gateway’s students come from more than 100 different middle schools.

The first event of the year was held on Friday evening, January 4, 2008 in the Gateway gym. Founding parent and faculty member Joyce Groom McMinn and 2002 graduate Erika Goncalves planned the event to welcome back Gateway Alumni for a Barbeque and Basketball game between Gateway alumni and current Gator basketball players. Juniors Emmet Kauffman and Maurice Woods cooked up a delicious spread of BBQ chicken and ribs, caesar salad and more for our alumni who came out to visit despite a stormy night.

The next Anniversary event will take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Gateway High School will host a free panel discussion in the Lisille B. Matheson Theatre on campus at 1430 Scott Street. The expert panel will consist of Steve Barr, Founder of Green Dot Schools, Steve Seleznow, Program Director of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Russlynn Ali, Executive Director of Education Trust-West an Ted Mitchell, CEO of NewSchools Venture Fund who will discuss “ What is working in public education -- 10 years of reform”.

The moderator will be Gateway Principal Sharon Olken. This panel discussion is open to the public and will begin at 4:30 pm ending at 5:30 pm.
