Renowned educator Debbie Meier visits Gateway

March 5th, 2004

Debbie Meier, the founding principal of Central Park East Secondary High School and author of The Power of Their Ideas, visited Gateway on February 11, 2004. During her visit Ms. Meier observed classes, met with teachers, and engaged with the Gateway faculty in a lively Q&A around assessment, professional responsibility, faculty culture and standards as they relate to teaching independent, critical thinking by using real-world exercises. Ms. Meier was impressed with Gateway, specifically citing the caliber of teaching and the level of student engagement.

As part of a Bill and Melinda Gates grant to Stanford Education Leadership Institute Sharon Olken and Gateway were invited to join its small schools collaborative, which is a network of small schools in the Bay Area working with Stanford to create authentic assessment standards.

As part of our involvement in the Stanford small schools network, and a huge honor, a number of Gateway faculty were invited to participate in a class taught by Debby Meier on excellence in education.

Debbie Meier is visiting schools involved in the Stanford class to gain a greater context of the challenges urban public schools are facing. Meier ended her Gateway visit by recommending "all high school educators" must read:

1) Horace's compromise by Theodore Sizer

2) Lives on the Boundary, Mike Rose

3) An Ethic of Excellence, Ron Berger

Debbie Meier is a passionate advocate for students, small schools, and change. An educational reformer, teacher and veteran school principal, Meier has led the movement to restructure large high schools into small, vibrant educational enclaves, schools within a school, housed within the same building.
