The mission of the community service club at Gateway is to help different communities succeed. Students need to complete 100 hours to graduate, or 25 hours per year at Gateway.

The Gateway Community Service program provides organized group activities to enable Gateway students participate in an array of volunteer opportunities. We serve the San Francisco community by volunteering in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food distribution centers, by conducting schoolwide food drives, beach and park cleanups, and sporting events.

We serve the Gateway community by tutoring, cleaning up the school, recycling, and working at school events such as graduation, the auction, the international potluck, open houses, and performances.

What can I do?

Volunteer at our next event. We have a number of exciting and fun opportunities to give back to your community each school year. This year we helped to make the Gateway International Potluck a success. On some Saturdays we have served at Glide Memorial Church's soup kitchen and it was a great experience. We will be going back again soon. We will also work at the San Francisco Food Bank, and other community organizations throughout the year. Watch the community service bulletin board and the calendar postings for upcoming events. You can also sign up for peer tutoring in Math, Spanish, or the Learning Center.

OK, so I'm ready to do community service; tell me the details.

Gateway students are required to complete 100 hours of community service to graduate. Students can earn hours over the summer, and hours will roll over from year to year. Meaning if you have 75 hours in the summer after freshman year, you only have to do 25 more sometime before you graduate.

Community service work cannot be paid. It must help others, not just yourself. You should choose activities that you enjoy and that will help you grow and learn.

When you complete some community service, fill out a form that you can pick up from the community service bulletin board or download above. Then turn in the completed form to the Community Service Advisor's mail box in the main office.

You can check your total hours by asking your advisor or by looking at the posting on the bulletin board.

Go out and find something you love to do that serves your community
